Ivan Curovic and David Grecic have authored a new book, How to Become an Effective Personal Trainer: Bridging the Worlds of Exercise Science and Physical Literacy, published by The Choir Press.

The book presents an evidence-informed framework for modern personal training, bringing together exercise science, physical literacy, and real-world coaching practice. It is designed to support coaches, fitness professionals, and personal trainers in translating research into effective, ethical, and impactful professional practice.

A key contribution of the book is its focus on the emerging concept of exercise literacy, which is presented as a practical extension of physical literacy within adult fitness and personal training contexts. Rather than viewing personal training only through technical instruction or short-term fitness goals, the book highlights the importance of confidence, competence, motivation, and sustainable behaviour change.

The text explores key areas of contemporary exercise science, including resistance training, neuromuscular development, metabolic stress, performance enhancement, body composition, nutrition, and supplementation. It also gives attention to the psychosocial dimensions of coaching, recognising that long-term results depend not only on training prescription, but also on the relationship between the trainer and client.

By combining scientific rigour with practical coaching insight, How to Become an Effective Personal Trainer offers a holistic and person-centred model of personal training. The book positions personal trainers as facilitators of sustainable lifestyle change, helping individuals build a positive and lasting relationship with movement, health, and wellbeing.
